Improving Your Vision This Year

Our vision is one of the most important senses we have. It allows us to view colour and appreciate art, it allows us to see the faces of the people we love, and it allows us to read stories and immerse ourselves in different worlds.

You might think that our eyesight is a sense which will deteriorate on its own over time with nothing that we can do, but this isn’t the case. In fact, there are plenty of ways that you can improve your vision this year to ensure you can enjoy the little things in life for longer.   1. Eat your vitamins and minerals


Vitamins A, C, and E are hugely important to our eyesight and they can allow our macular to stay stronger for much longer in life, which in turn keeps our vision strong. Minerals such as zinc will also work to do this and it is important that we get enough of it in our systems.

If you are hoping to add these vitamins into your diet for the healthier pair of eyes, here are some foods to focus on:

  • Spinach
  • Sweet potato

  • Berries
  • red peppers

  1. Carotenoids

One ingredient in particular which is found in foods such as carrots and leafy vegetables are carotenoids. These are a nutrient which is found inside the retina of the eye and help us to see. This is why we are always told when we are children that carrots will help us see in the dark, because it will actually strengthen our eyes. You can take carotenoids as a supplement for stronger eyes and make sure to get plenty into your diet too.

3. Get moving

Maintaining a healthy weight and staying lean is a key to happiness and healthiness in all aspects of the body, and our eyesight is no different in this respect. When we gain weight we are more likely to develop health issues such as type 2 diabetes, and this can cause damage to the blood vessels in our eyes. The reason for this is that we have too much sugar running through our blood and this can cause damage to tiny blood vessels making it hard for us to see. Keep your sugar levels down and stay healthy in order to keep your eyesight.

  1. Take your medication

If you have a chronic illness which you suffer from on a day-to-day basis such as high blood pressure, you need to keep it maintained if you want to avoid damage to the eyes. Inflammation in the optic nerve can cause a lot of pain and can even lead to vision loss, and this can be an effect of not taking your medication every day.

5. Protect them

If you are playing a sport or you are swimming in the sea, make sure you protect your eyes with some goggles or glasses. Our eyes can be sensitive to light, pressure, bacteria and debris so it is important to keep them covered and protected when we are doing strenuous activities. And of course, never forget to wear sunglasses on a bright and sunny day!
